“If Trump is overthrown, then the US Constitution will no longer apply,” Helme, who represents the populist and nationalist Ekre party in the country’s coalition government, said in a radio report quoted by Estonian media. Helme also reasoned in the article about a civil war in the United States after the elections.

Prime Minister Jüri Ratas (Center Party) condemns the Interior Minister’s move, as well as similar statements by his son, Finance Minister Martin Helme.

– Mart and Martin Helme must immediately stop undermining Estonian-American relations, says Ratas according to the ERR media company.

Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid also condemns the statements.

“The verbal attacks against the newly elected US president by the Estonian Minister of Finance and the Minister of the Interior today are an attack on Estonian democracy and security,” he wrote in a statement.

Mart Helme has finished several times before in bad weather after controversial statements. Among other things, he has spoken of Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin in derogatory terms and has expressed that homosexuals can “go to Sweden”.

In a difficult situation after last year’s elections, the Center Party, Ekre and Fäderneslandet formed a coalition government. The fragile cooperation has gone through a series of political crises since then, and three Ekre ministers have resigned or been beaten.
