He came to the club after gold in 2017 as a replacement for refugee Anton Tinnerholm. Malmö FF had won the Swedish Championship trophy in four of the last five years, and Eric Larsson was determined to continue choosing titles in the MFF suit.
But the acquisition of Sundsvall, instead, during its first two seasons would be aspired to league gold by the Stockholm clubs AIK and Djurgården. Samma Dif also won the cup final against MFF during the Scanian’s chaotic spring season with Magnus Pehrsson leading the way in spring 2018.
This year it was again a final defeat in the cup, this time against IFK Gothenburg. But unlike the 0-3 debacle at Tele2 Arena two years earlier, it now looks like it will be gold. With four rounds remaining from this year’s Allsvenskan, MFF secures the Swedish Championship title with a home win against Sirius on Sunday.
“It is difficult to talk that we have a ten point advantage”
Eric Larsson, who longed for the Lennart Johansson trophy, applauds.
– It is something that has been fought for a long time. We were very close last year (one point behind Djurgården). We have sat in a very good seat now and it is clear that the goal has always been to win gold, says Larsson.
You lead the Allsvenskan with ten points. Was it as superior as the table shows?
– A game can lie, but after so many games it is difficult to say that we have a ten point advantage. Of course, it feels good that we have four games.
“Take it every day of the week anyway”
In normal cases, MFF celebrates the gold together with the fans in the arena and then in town. Given the coronavirus, no such thing is allowed. If Malmö FF wins against Sirius, he will face empty stands, and then a soft celebration awaits him. Anel Ahmedhodzic, for example, has said that once the gold is secured, he will go home and play the video game Fifa. Eric Larsson hasn’t planned anything.
– I don’t get anything out in advance. If we win gold it won’t be a regular celebration, but of course I would have taken it every weekday anyway and we’ll make sure to win gold next year and then celebrate with the fans, Larsson states before continuing. :
– It sucks to say, but as the season has gone, you have gotten used to the empty stands. It had almost felt strange with the audience, but of course it would have been a lot of fun if the fans had been present at the match. I thought about it last time against HIF. Under normal circumstances, after the derby win, we stood up and jumped with our fans for five minutes afterward. Now it happened that we went directly to the dressing room and drank water …
No plans to leave MFP: “But a lot can happen”
Eric Larsson has three more years with Malmö FF on the contract. It’s common for several prominent players to go for a gold at the Swedish Championship, but the 29-year-old himself has no specific thoughts on going abroad this winter.
– I thrive very well in Malmö. Right now I don’t think there is any better place to be. So many things can happen in football and becoming a foreign professional is something that you have had as your goal during your career.
