Acting President Joe Biden gives victory speeches.
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden declares himself the winner of the US presidential elections, in a speech to the American people.
In the divided country, many of his supporters celebrated, while Trump supporters expressed defiance and disappointment.
– It’s time for America to heal, says Biden.
After weighing his words in gold for several days in a row, Joe Biden finally dared to declare himself the winner.
– The people of this country have spoken. They have given us a clear victory, a resounding victory.
A large jubilant crowd welcomed Joe Biden to his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware. Many wore mouth guards, but were ignorant of keeping their distance.
“Understand the disappointment”
Biden thanked everyone involved in the campaign, and especially his wife. He also addressed Trump voters directly, reiterating his message of unity.
– I understand your disappointment tonight. I’ve lost myself a couple of times. But now we are going to give ourselves a chance, he said and continued:
– It is time to put aside the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature, see each other again, listen again. To progress, we must stop treating our opponents as enemies. They are not our enemies. They are americans.
The first to take the stage was Kamala Harris, who will become vice president when Joe Biden takes office. He said that the soul of the United States has been at stake in the elections.
– You sent a clear message. You chose hope, unity, decency, research, and yes, the truth. “You chose Joe Biden as the next president of the United States,” she told the cheering crowd.
She also writes history herself, as the first female vice president.
– Even if I’m the first, I won’t be the last. Because every girl who looks tonight sees that this is a land of opportunity. And for the children of our country, regardless of gender, our country has sent them a clear message, Harris said, continuing:
– Dream with ambitions, suffer with conviction and look at yourself in a way that others may not, perhaps because they have never seen it before. And rest assured, we will pay tribute to you.
Trump silence
Neither Harris nor Biden mentioned Trump during the speech. And constant reporting from US media outlets that Biden secured victory was met by some defiant tweets from Trump, but mostly silence, from the White House.
Biden’s supporters celebrated in various parts of the country. On the streets of Washington DC, a strong democratic bastion, champagne sales increased markedly, reports AFP. Elsewhere, disappointed Trump supporters gathered to protest and show their support for the incumbent president.
“They will never convince me that he (Trump) did not win,” a disappointed Trump voter in Michigan told The New York Times.
At the same time, vote counting continued in various parts of the country. In Georgia, the most even state to date, 5,000 votes will be tallied as a result of some votes not appearing to have been scanned, CNN reports.
“A guy from Delaware”
For little Wilmington, with about 70,000 residents, it was a great day. The ancient Swedish countryside, southwest of Philadelphia, is rarely the center of the world’s attention. The Delaware News Journal exclaimed, “Get it – A guy from Delaware named Joe will be the next president of the United States.”
– Everybody is happy. Everybody is a huge Biden fan here. He is from the area and has been involved in local politics here for a long time. Everyone was happy when he was elected vice president, says Jamie Myer, who works at an Italian restaurant in town.
She herself missed his speech for work.
– But everyone who has eaten here tonight has tried to get out of here quickly to get home and see it, he says.
Jamie Myer says she has met Joe Biden sometimes because he goes to the same church as her. She describes it as nice.
TT: How does it feel to have someone from your hometown elected president?
– It’s quite impressive. Hope it puts Delaware on the map, says Jamie Myer with a laugh.
“Everyone has known him”
Biden himself has primarily highlighted his birthplace, Scranton, where he lived the early years of his life. Scranton is located in politically important Pennsylvania. But Jamie Myer doesn’t mind Wilmington being overshadowed.
– Scranton is its roots. But I think he comes here more often than there. Delaware is a very small state with a close community. Everybody knows everybody here, so I don’t think anybody feels left out. Because we all know him, everyone has known him at some point, she says.
TT: What are your expectations of him?
– I was quite neutral in this election. I only want the best for the country. I look forward to seeing what you can do for us, she says.
