Norrköping’s miscalculation in the European hunt: fell to Mjällby in Strandvallen

Before the match against Mjällby, IFK Norrköping was in fifth place in their quest for a European spot.

Most recently, “Beijing” lost 2-1 to Elfsborg at Borås Arena and on Saturday, therefore, they wanted to get revenge and find their way back to the winning track, and they opened the match strongly.

They dominated ball possession and created to the max. But Mjällby defended well, and Beijing failed to make a dent in the home team, which was not completely harmless on offense either. Mjällby also put intense pressure on Norrköping when he had the ball on his own baseline and became very stressed, and after 37 minutes they got a dividend.

Right-back Joel Nilsson advanced towards the Norrköping midfield before finding Moses Ogbu behind the Norrköping baseline. Completely free with the goalkeeper, Ogbu made no mistakes, but outplayed Isak Pettersson on Norrköping’s goal for Mjällby 1-0.

During the second half, Norrköping was clearly the most dominant. They forced more or less the entire half to draw at 1-1. For the last ten minutes of the match, it was a one-goal game in which Norrköping basically lifted everything they had in the offensive penalty area, but failed to make a dent in Mjällby.

Mjällby threatened some counterattacks when Norrköping had lifted the team, and then the home side went 2-0. Jacob Bergström broke free in the 90th minute, circled Isak Pettersson and made Mjällby 2-0.

Mjällby won the match and claimed their second consecutive victory, while Norrköping suffered their second consecutive defeat. With the victory, Mjällby climbs to seventh in the Allsvenskan table, while Norrköping remains in fifth place and can be overtaken by Hammarby if he wins his match on Sunday.

– That’s bullshit. We did not reach the level we need at all, and we did not do it in the last game either. So it feels heavy because now we have to do it and be good. We have a lot to work on before the next matches, because then we must do everything we can if we want to have the chance to achieve happiness this season, says Eric Smith from Norrköping to Dplay after the match.

Mjällby: Eriksson – Nilsson, Watson, Löfgren, Björkander, Hodzic – Gustavsson, Sabovic, Löfquist – Bergström – Ogbu.

Beijing: Pettersson – Castegren, Dagerstål, Smith, Krogh Gerson – Fransson, Thern, Bergmann Johannesson – Levi, Nyman, Haksabanovic.
