Uniting the United States will be one of Joe Biden’s most important tasks as the new president, says Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde (S).
She hopes and believes that Swedish relations with the US can be even better when Biden takes over.
On Saturday afternoon, word came that Joe Biden would be taking home the state of Pennsylvania. And with that, he becomes the 46th president of the United States.
– It is good that after so long after Election Day, we have received a very clear message that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have received enough electoral votes to take over as president and vice president, Ann Linde tells TT.
One cloud of concern is that so far President Donald Trump has not acknowledged the election result, but instead declared that he will continue the issue in court.
– I am completely sure that the American institutions will be able to make a change of president in accordance with what was expressed by the American people in the elections.
The most important task
TT: America is very polarized. Do you think Biden can unite the country?
– It is an extremely difficult task. But Biden has always said that he wants to be the president of the entire United States and try to unite the population.
– I think it is very important for the United States that it get more dialogue and not have that irreconcilability that has been characterized in recent years. I think that’s one of the most important tasks for Joe Biden.
The relationship can be improved
Ann Linde says the relationship between Sweden and the United States is important.
– Both our security and defense cooperation and our prosperity depend largely on a good relationship with the United States. And we’ve had it with Trump, too, but I think there is room for improvement in several areas.
He notes, among other things, that Biden wants the United States to regain its leading role in world politics, that he wants to rejoin the Paris Agreement, and that he wants to rejoin the World Health Organization.
– You also think it’s good to cooperate with the EU in a way that Trump has had less interest in.
Linde stresses that Kamala Harris will be the first woman to become vice president.
– As a foreign minister pursuing a feminist foreign policy, this is especially fun. Kamala Harris is such a strong politician that she often also raises issues related to diversity, women’s rights, and minority rights. That feels incredibly exciting.
