After four days of harrowing vote recount, millions of Americans breathe a sigh of relief. Their candidate, Joe Biden, wins the election and becomes the next president of the country.

Cheering people spontaneously gather in the streets and on the lawns in front of their houses. They honk in their cars, they honk in pots and pans.

At the Chase Center in Wilmington, Joe Biden’s home state of Delaware, supporters met again. They have been coming to the parking lots surrounding the Chase Center since Election night, to show their support and hopefully see the future president.

“Now I am so happy”

On Saturday, people showed up shortly after CNN announced Biden as the winner. There were songs, dances and cheers already at lunchtime, although the future president was not expected until eight at night.

– I started crying when he finished. It means a lot to me. I’ve been sitting at work staring at the phone and watching the news and updating Twitter all the time. On Tuesday I was incredibly stressed, but on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday I felt better and better. Now I’m very happy about this, says 26-year-old speech therapist Haley Olsen.

Debbie Warren, 58, dated her mother Faith Green. Faith had brought a doll representing Joe Biden, with a mouth guard! – on a desk covered with an American flag.

– Is so big. For us as black women, it doesn’t matter how great Kamala Harris becomes vice president. I have not slept at all. But she was sure she would win, says Debbie Warren.

Brad Sandhaus, 25, traffic engineer, Wilmington: – We came here to celebrate this great victory. Over the past four years, many have felt insignificant, and future President Biden and future Vice President Harris will be able to change that and show that this country belongs to everyone. Mary Davis, 57, works at the Wilmington beauty salon: – This is the story that is being written. I had decided not to miss this. These last four years have been very divisive and we must unite, as a country. Joe Biden understands people and their feelings. I’m so happy.Photo: Johan eriksson
Debbie Warren, 58, works in healthcare, New Castle: – It’s so big. For us as black women, it doesn’t matter how great Kamala Harris becomes vice president. I have not slept at all. But he was sure he would win. Faith Green, 74, Retired, Wilmington: – I pulled this out three days ago, because I knew we would win, says Faith and shows Joe Biden doll sitting at a desk with the American flag.Photo: Johan eriksson

Dancing and singing

In Manhattan and Harlem, New York, people dance and sing in the street. Thousands of happy New Yorkers lined the streets at night, Swedish time, and cheered the election victory.

At Columbus Circle, in the southwest corner of Central Park, where the Trump International Hotel is located, New York Senator Chuck Schumer showed up to celebrate.

In Louisville, Kentucky, neighbors toast with champagne, reports AP.

Emmi Braselton, 37, a graphic designer, was walking down the street in Atlanta with her little daughter Sylvie, 2, when noise suddenly exploded. She says her daughter asked, “Mom, what is that?”

– I answered that the good guy won. And that we have a woman as vice president. Then she said, “I want to be president,” Emmi Braselton told Reuters.

Kay Nicholas, 73, a retired principal, tells the AP that she was vacuuming her home in Detroit when she learned that Biden had been declared the winner.

“Nature also celebrates”

– I could only say “thank God”. It has nothing to do with Democrats or Republicans. It’s about decency, he says and continues:

– This country has integrity and I hope we can be decent. I think Biden can do that, that he can regain kindness.

And Lola Faleit, 26, a human resources manager in New York, believes that even the weather gods are on Joe Biden’s side.

– Now I feel less worried about my immigrant friends. 2016 I cried, today we celebrate. Look, the sky is clear blue, the sun is shining. Nature also celebrates, he tells the AP.
