Longer but not necessarily richer. It is the effect of the temperate climate in the mushroom season.

– There are still mushrooms to be found, says mycologist Michael Krikorev.

The traditional mushroom season is over, but the mild climate means that those looking for the right place will continue to find mushrooms for a while longer.

– There is no new mushroom boom, but the season has been extended. Where it usually exists, it seems to stay, says Michael Krikorev, a mushroom expert at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

He also points out that what remains in the forest is not necessarily the same type as a few months ago.

– It is not the case that karljohan or common yellow chanterelles will appear. Degradation fungi are those that thrive in the fall, they do not work in symbiosis with trees in the same way as others, such as funnel chanterelles.

Krikorev says he has noticed an increased interest in mushroom picking in recent years. For the uninitiated, he has some basic tips:

– It is important to keep reading. Get a good mushroom book and maybe some apps. Then you can follow the weather reports, where it rained a couple of weeks ago is advice. But it can differ quite a few kilometers.

He also thinks that the unaccustomed should not overestimate his ability.

– A common beginner mistake is to go out and choose everything you see and then try to determine the species.

Since there are about 5,000 varieties of mushrooms in Sweden and only about 100 edibles, Krikorev’s advice to get started is concentrated:

– I would say that you learn two or three species, what they are like and where they grow and then go out to look for them, in that place.
