Lundqvist on conversations with family: “Extremely emotional”

The New York Rangers bought Henrik Lundqvist and his long stay at the club ended. Did the speculation start right away?

Would you resign?

Would any other NHL team attack the goalie?

Or would it even be an ending in Frölunda?

However, it didn’t take long.

Very shortly after the New York Rangers bought him, Washington Capital showed interest in the 38-year-old goalkeeper and gave him a one-season deal.

However, this was not the only alternative for Henrik Lundqvist.

– We had four or five good alternatives. We carefully reviewed what fit best. What did the team look like? Where did I get a good chance to play a lot? Where was the best chance of winning? He says in an interview with Expressen.

Leaving the Rangers and New York after 15 seasons was not easy. Neither for Henrik Lundqvist nor for the family, which is made up of the couple’s wife and two daughters.

– Yes, it has been tremendously emotional. They were tears, absolutely, both for me and for the family. There have been tears and many conversations with the family. So this was the Rangers’ decision. I accept that. But my love for the sport makes me want to keep playing and no one can blame me for that. I feel very simple in this situation and I only feel the positive energy of the fans in New York, he says.

Putting the skates on the famous shelf was something Henrik Lundqvist was never particularly interested in.

– So the Stanley Cup is the goal. But also the journey there. I really want to play again, he says.
