The airport has become a financial concern for the municipality. Therefore, in 2019 an investigation was started to see what alternatives are available. During that process, a private actor appeared, according to municipal director Martin Andreae.

The agreement consists of two parts: the operation of the airport and the purchase of Norrköping Airport AB. The job description that was presented today will then go to the city council, and if they like what they see, it will go to the city council.
The timing of the airport takeover can be discussed if the corona pandemic persists. Otherwise, the idea is that there will be a new owner at the turn of the year 2021/2022, Martin Andreae said at the digital press conference.
He also said that this also applies to the requirement of 100,000 passengers to receive part of the operational support. Otherwise, a buyer will take over the staff and work towards a greener flight in the future.
“Great interest”
– We have made several attempts with scheduled flights that have failed and we cannot put more money. Now an alternative has emerged that we can seriously discuss politically, said Lars Stjernkvist (S), president of the municipal council.
A political decision will be made in December. Closing the airport instead, according to Martin Andreae, would cost the municipality between 30 and 35 million.
– If we don’t sell it, the question will come back to us. But we wouldn’t have done it if there hadn’t been a lot of interest, said Lars Stjernkvist (S).
From the municipality, they also believe that a private owner could run another business, such as hotels. Someone who is not possible for a municipality.
