The staffing situation means that a special crisis staff follows the development of events and prepares the hospital to be able to receive a greater number of patients, the hospital writes on its website. For some time now, there has been a blanket ban on visits to Södersjukhuset due to covid-19. This applies to both visitors and followers.
On Friday, 273 patients were treated at the county emergency hospital and geriatrics for Covid-19, a sharp increase compared to 225 on Thursday. This is demonstrated by the daily update of the Stockholm region. Of the patients, 193 are treated in emergency hospitals and 59 in geriatrics. 21 patients were cared for in intensive care. During the spring, a maximum of 1,100 patients were treated in some type of hospital care for covid-19.
In the last three days, 3,361 new cases of covid-19 have been found, of which 40 have been sampled in a special accommodation for the elderly. Depending on the region, infection has been found in 28 special homes.
Johan Bratt, chief physician for the Stockholm region, says this is a serious situation:
– We have a greater spread of the infection and a greater need for attention, and in principle it has doubled in a week. It’s a faster rate of increase in admissions than we expected, says Johan Bratt.
The increase in hospital admissions is mainly in hospital care, less intensive care, which is a change compared to the situation this spring.
– It seems that our patients need intensive care to a lesser extent than in spring. It is, of course, a serious situation and we have now strengthened the general advice, so we will see the possible effect of it in the future. It’s too soon to say that. But of course it is extremely important that you follow the strictest advice now.
On Friday, three of the region’s hospitals were in personal mode.
– It is above all to coordinate resources within hospitals and redistribute so that more covid-19 patients can be treated. However, we have a capacity within the region that is sufficient now. But it is a difficult situation. We are also increasing the number of covid-19 places in geriatrics.
Earlier this week both Danderyd Hospital and St. Göran Hospital went into personal mode due to pressure caused by the increasing spread of the infection. Since last week, Danderyd Hospital has reduced the number of planned operations to increase the number of hospital care locations as more covid patients need care.
At Norrtälje Hospital, the smallest in the region, the situation is also under pressure. There, covid patients currently occupy one of the four wards.
There are three emergency modes in the healthcare sector: personal mode, backup mode, and disaster mode. The staff situation means that a special health management team is kept informed of the situation, which follows developments and takes action.
It is mainly older patients who become so seriously ill that they need to be admitted, while the spread of infection is greatest in younger age groups, according to Johan Bratt.
– We see that the period of care is shorter, and we have better survival figures in intensive care compared to this spring, so we have learned more about the treatment of the disease.
During the past week, there has also been an increase in the number of deaths from covid-19. Since November 3, 19 people have died with a confirmed covid-19.
– Those who die are elderly patients. It is about the elderly who die in hospitals, but also in our special accommodation. They are usually people with underlying diseases.
