DRAMA The camera flies over the city of Tehran, which has one million inhabitants, at night. Skyscrapers next to the 435-tall Milad tower, neon, kilometer-long traffic jams. A young woman in handcuffs arrives at a state-of-the-art television studio. Maryam, 22, has been sentenced to death by a court for murdering her 65-year-old husband.
Now it can be forgiven and not executed. The one who decides is Mona, the adult daughter of the dead man. Everything happens in front of television cameras in a live show.
The television producers want Maryam to be forgiven, and the audience can comment via text message and contribute to the bloody money that must be paid if Maryam is forgiven. During the show, we learn more about Maryam’s life and relationship with her husband. A melodrama is developed with characteristics of a soap opera.
Yalda is a festival that is celebrated during the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. Television wants to offer stimulating entertainment, with songs and poetry, but Maryam and Mona reluctantly participate. One female protagonist is rich, the other poor, but they are equally limited by the laws of society and the demands of the environment. It is well played and attractive.
Even behind the cameras it loads. The TV show is called “The Joy of Forgiveness”, but there is more sadness and pain in a fascinating game with various victims.
