It may take some time before the government feels ready to congratulate the newly elected president of the United States.

– We must have a legally sustainable result. We cannot have two who say they have won, says Chancellor Ann Linde (S).

When TT meets with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the vote count is still ongoing in the United States. The election seems very even and both presidential candidates believe in victory.

If the situation is still unclear, or if one of the candidates questions it, when all the votes have been counted, Ann Linde will not send any congratulations.

– One must declare himself the winner and must declare himself defeated. If this does not happen, the electoral votes will decide and give their answer on December 14, says Linde.

– When everything is ready, also legally, then we will consider that there is a new president.

It may take weeks

So many weeks may pass before the Secretary of State sends the congratulatory message to Donald Trump or Joe Biden.

The foreign policy spokesman for the moderates, Hans Wallmark, believes it is right for the chancellor to wait with congratulations.

– It is clear that he only congratulates when there is an officially declared winner in the US presidential elections. There is no reason to precede it. As little as President Trump can nominate himself before all the votes are counted, any administration can nominate either candidate as the winner, he says.

No electoral authority

In the US, there is no central electoral authority, as in Sweden, but individual states report their own results.

From a Republican point of view, the votes have already been raised to test the results in court. The Trump campaign has filed lawsuits in courts in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia and demanded a recalculation in Wisconsin, according to the AFP news agency. The same is to be expected in Nevada, according to Fox News.

Donald Trump has repeatedly said that vote counting should be stopped, hinting that the large number of mail-in ballots, which according to the state can be counted up to several days after Election Day, as long as they are sent on time, are associated in any way with voter fraud. However, this has not been confirmed.
