Streets flooded in Honduras after storm Eta.

At least 50 people in Guatemala have died in a landslide since Storm Eta hit the country, the country’s president said. Several other countries in the region also report deaths

– In the morning we had four deaths, now the figure exceeds 50 deaths, says Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei.

The landslide around the city of San Cristóbal wiped out about 25 houses and rescuers have difficulty reaching the affected area due to flooded roads.

– We try to get there on foot because there is no other way, says Giammattei

Saved from the rooftops

Several people have died as a result of the storm in nearby countries. In Honduras, some 500 people have been rescued from rooftops, as heavy rains from Eta caused major flooding. Police, soldiers and firefighters will continue the rescue operation during the night.

– We will not leave the area until we have rescued the last person, says the country’s president, Juan Orlando Hernández, in a television broadcast.

In addition to Honduras and Guatemala, deaths from the storm have been reported in Nicaragua, Panama and Costa Rica.

The fishermen were rescued

The good news from the devastation was that 60 fishermen who were reported missing at sea in Honduras on Tuesday were found safe and sound, after taking refuge on the reef before being rescued.

Eta arrived as a Category 4 hurricane Tuesday over Nicaragua with strong winds, before weakening during its journey inland.

The storm is forecast to continue northwest over Honduras and Belize, then put out to sea and gather strength, then possibly move toward the Cayman Islands, Cuba and southern Florida.
