The Senate Can Make Your Election Promises Impossible

Even if Joe Biden wins the presidential election, he will have a difficult time getting his policy passed.

This is because Republicans are likely to retain power in the Senate, where they can reject virtually any national policy proposal from the president.

– It is a political war, says the American expert Jan Hallenberg.

National political power rests largely with the Senate, the Republican majority house that, along with the House of Representatives, enacts American law.

This means that Joe Biden, even if he wins the presidential election, will be a weak president, according to Jan Hallenberg, an American expert and research leader at the Foreign Policy Institute.

Political war

– Biden has promised many things and if he now becomes president in this situation, it will be very difficult to implement everything.

Green climate change, abortion issues, gun regulations, and investments in more accessible healthcare are electoral promises that a Republican Senate makes virtually impossible to keep.

– You will have to reduce it correctly. He has said that his great advantage is being able to talk to Republicans. Maybe I can, but in recent years the compromises have become increasingly difficult. It’s a political war, says Jan Hallenberg.

Becomes a weak president

Many of the biggest bills require 60 votes to pass the Senate, some just 50. But right now, it appears the Democratic Party is getting less than that.

– This is part of the American dilemma. Even if he manages to pass some important proposals, they risk falling before the Supreme Court, which is conservative.

The president always has great power when it comes to foreign policy issues. But domestically, Biden runs the risk of becoming nearly powerless as president.
