Spread of infection is increasing in Uppsala despite stricter advice

On October 20, local general councils were established to reduce the spread of the infection in the Uppsala region. After just over two weeks, it can be said that the effect, so far, has not materialized.

– If the local general councils had stopped the spread of the infection, we would now have seen the effect. The bottom line is that the spread continued for the first few days. But it may have an effect in the future. “We were a pilot for this type of local council,” says Anna Gillman, an assistant physician for infection control in the Uppsala region.

The cases that are now visible in the statistics, Gillman believes, should have been infected at the same time or shortly after the advice went into effect. Despite this, the number of cases and hospitalized patients has increased.

– The hope was that the bars would stay stagnant, and not really sink. Unfortunately, this has not happened yet. The bars continue to rise, which is concerning, says Gillman.

Despite this, he is optimistic about the possible effects.

– There has been a great response in the media, and both companies and individuals have reacted to the council. Even if we can’t read anything yet, I think it affects, he says.

Mikael Köhler, Director of Health and Medical Services in the Uppsala region he believes that the hope for a quick effect may have been “a bit naive”:

– In a way, it hasn’t worked at all as expected. The spread of the infection has doubled in a week. At least in terms of the number of cases. It fills up in the hospital, both in the intensive care unit and in the regular wards, says and continues:

– I think we need to absorb even more to reduce the spread of infection. These proposals are not enough.

One of the city councils of Uppsala is to avoid traveling by public transport. Despite this, city bus trips have increased in recent weeks, says Helena Klange, press manager for UL, which is responsible for public transportation in Uppsala County. At the same time, longer trips within the region have been reduced.

– You can interpret this development in different ways. For example, that more people work from home or are free, and therefore take the opportunity to run errands in the city. Or that people just ignore the guidelines, he says.

Public health authority state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said Tuesday that it is still too early to assess the effect in Uppsala.

– It will likely take a couple to three weeks before a breakthrough occurs in the spread of the infection. We believe and hope it works.
