In a short time, the proportion of people who test positive for the coronavirus in Stockholm has doubled. Development worries the region.
During the last four days, 3,317 new cases of covid-19 have been found in Stockholm, representing a sharp increase in the number of infected. In the corresponding period last week, 1,678 new cases were discovered. This is what the Stockholm Region writes in the status report published yesterday afternoon.
The increase is also clear weekly. 6,196 new cases in week 44, compared to 2,966 cases the previous week.
More in hospitals
Last week, a total of 38,207 tests were analyzed for ongoing covid-19 infection. Of these, 16.3 percent were positive, which is a record. Never before, since mass testing of people with symptoms was introduced in late summer, have so many tested positive. The proportion of positive test results the week before, week 43, was 8.4 percent.
The number of Stockholm residents being cared for in hospitals is also increasing, the region writes. According to yesterday’s report, 212 confirmed COVID-19 patients are being treated in an emergency hospital or geriatric care, which is 64 more than in Friday’s situation report. Of these, 22 patients receive intensive care.
Since last Friday, eight more deaths have also been reported.
Delay
However, both in the intensive care unit and in the deceased, there is a certain delay, since it takes on average about ten days before a patient may need intensive care from the moment of infection, and between two and three weeks before he dies, which is why these figures rather reflect the spread of the infection in Stockholm one or more weeks ago.
Stockholm Health and Care Director Björn Eriksson and Infection Control Doctor Maria Rotzén Östlund have previously expressed great concern about development in the region. That all residents, young and old, must now do everything possible to follow the current recommendations. That is, keep your distance, avoid shops and businesses, reduce the number of social contacts, work from home if possible, and stay home in case of symptoms.
