The president is not elected directly by the electorate, but indirectly through electors. To become president, a candidate must have the support of more than half of 538 voters, that is, at least 270. In all but two states, the winner takes all, the candidate who gets the most number of votes wins all voters in the state.
The states that can decide everything
In practice, the presidential election is decided in states that run and weigh uniformly among the candidates. These states are called “transition states” or “battlefield states.” Whoever wins the most important of the wave’s master states, and thus their constituents, is also likely to become president.
