It was last week that the environmental administration received an anonymous tip that a guest had a cockroach on his hamburger that was served at a restaurant in central Malmö.
The same day that two food inspectors did the inspection, the restaurant was closed. The decision establishes that serious hygienic deficiencies have been identified.
The municipality staff was able to establish that there were live and dead cockroaches in both the kitchen and the bathroom.
The animals were of different sizes and stages of development. A dead cockroach was also found in the drawer where the burgers were kept. Animals were also found in the bathroom.
Had cleaned a lot
The miserable sight was met by the inspectors, despite the restaurant staff certifying that they had been great the day before.
The restaurant is now closed indefinitely. Before it can reopen, the premises must be decontaminated and then approved by the environmental administration.
The unit’s director, Arvid Nordland, considers the incident to be serious.
– Cockroaches can transmit diseases. Then there is also a disgusting factor. The restaurant management has clearly failed to fulfill its responsibility.
The fact that the authorities temporarily close restaurants due to sanitary problems is not the only one. Arvid Nordland estimates that it occurs between 20 and 30 times a year in Malmö. This year, however, it is only the fourth closure in the city.
– If you introduce roaches into the room, it can be difficult to get rid of them. They like heat and can sometimes be difficult to detect.
Gone too far
But when the animals end up in the food, Arvid Nordland thinks he has come too far, so the restaurant should have discovered the problem long ago.
In the case in question, the environmental administration has only received one anonymous report. Therefore, it is not known if anyone became ill from the incident.
Arvid Nordland states that the environmental administration should in principle visit all restaurants in the city at least once a year.
There is a history of the restaurant in question, but not a case involving roaches before.
