The coronavirus is spreading upward in Sweden.
The number of infections has doubled in two weeks.
Plus, we now have the highest death rates in nearly four months.
– There is nothing to suggest that it stops, says Tegnell.
The number of deaths per day with covid-19 is increasing in Sweden, according to statistics from the Public Health Agency. Today 31 new deaths were reported, which, however, is a sum of the number of cases during the weekend and Monday.
In the last two weeks, on October 22 and 26, the number of daily deaths has been eight.
Sweden hasn’t had such high death rates per day since last summer. More specifically, on July 18, when twelve deaths were reported. Even if the stats lag behind, you can see that the death curve is pointing upward.
– There is a weak tendency for the number of deaths to start increasing. This is a development that is heading in the wrong direction, says Anders Tegnell, an epidemiologist for the city, at today’s Public Health Agency press conference.
Social context the cause
At the same time, the number of infected is increasing considerably. In the last two weeks, the number of people with confirmed covid-19 has doubled.
– The increase in Sweden has been growing week by week. There is no evidence that it stops, Tegnell says.
– It seems that social contacts are the cause in all regions. Parties, workplaces, private gatherings, etc. This spring, we managed to push the curve down together, we must take joint responsibility to do it again. We need to limit the contacts now.
Greater pressure on VAT
Patients are also increasing in intensive care units across the country. Right now, 77 people infected with covids are receiving intensive care. On October 19, that number was 30 people, and the curve has been pointing upward ever since.
A total of 134,532 people have been confirmed to be infected with Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic. This is an increase of 10,177 new cases since last Friday.
5,969 people with covid-19 have died in Sweden.
