Uppsala was the first to introduce new local councils to curb the spread of the infection in Sweden.

Residents should avoid public transportation and avoid living with people outside the home.

But the infection has continued to increase.

Since last Friday, another 491 people have been confirmed to be infected. On average, 150 people tested positive per day between October 26 and 30, which is double since last week, the region writes in a press release.

– We are deeply concerned about development. Now residents must act quickly if we are to be able to provide normal care during the winter. We take the hardening of city councils seriously. They must be followed as if they were teams. Otherwise, it can end badly, says Mikael Köhler, medical and health director in the region.

More hospitalized fears

At the same time, the number of people needing hospital care has increased. On Monday, 61 patients were treated with covid-19.

– We do not know how many of the new cases will lead to hospitalizations, but there is a great risk that more and more care places in hospitals will be occupied by patients with covid-19. That is why the situation is so dire, Köhler continues.

Local councils have also been introduced in Skåne, Östergötland and Stockholm. In Stockholm, 203 people are now being treated for covid-19 in hospitals, an increase of 50 people since last Friday, DN writes.

– I am very concerned about the increased spread of the infection, says Health and Medical Director Björn Eriksson.
