Mother Zarah thought her daughter had a stomach ache.
But it soon turned out that 10-year-old Magdalena had developed the dangerous MIS-C syndrome: hyperinflammation in children who had COVID-19.
– It was an insidious initial course with completely normal stomach symptoms, says Zarah.
Magdalena, 10, is one of 70 children in Sweden who have suffered from the unusual disease MIS-C, infantile hyperinflammation.
The diagnosis, often compared to Kawasaki disease, is a new complication from Covid-19.
It means that the immune system attacks the body and can be fatal.
It started with the youngest son in the family, who is 7 years old, and he got a fever and a headache.
A few days later, Zarah’s older brother and special resident were also affected. All three developed similar symptoms.
Covid-19 test positive
Zarah soon became ill with respiratory symptoms. Then the parents tested for covid-19 and the tests came back positive.
Meanwhile, Magdalena continued going to school as usual.
– We just waited for it to be his turn, says Zarah.
On May 25 he came home and his eyes were bright. He also had a rash on his face and elevated body temperature. The girl was home from school all week, but otherwise felt fine.
Twelve days passed and it was time to graduate from school.
Suddenly, Magdalena began to feel bad. He developed symptoms reminiscent of an upset stomach, with diarrhea, vomiting, and fever.

Magdalena, 10, had the fatal MIS-C complication of covid-19.
I felt something was wrong
Parents, who work in the healthcare sector, instinctively felt that something was wrong.
– I examined her and also looked for signs of Kawasaki, but she only had stomach symptoms, with the difference that the fever was very high. We decided that if they hadn’t released it in the morning, we would go to the emergency room, says Zarah.
Magdalena’s fever, which was now around 40 degrees, refused to go away. The parents took the daughter to the pediatric emergency room for a number of different tests, including COVID-19.
– We didn’t know anything about hyperinflammation and we didn’t know what we were looking for, but the feeling told us that something was not right, says Zarah.
Red lips
By this time, Magdalena had also received red lips and fingertips and rashes in the form of individual spots.
When the test results came in, the doctors realized it was serious.
Magdalena’s test results not only showed that she was ill with covid-19, but also suspected MIS-C, hyperinflammation.
She was quickly examined for her heart and lungs. When the doctors were sure of the diagnosis, he received intravenous cortisone and immune globulin to dampen the strong reaction of the immune system.

“I didn’t know what kind of disease it was, no one told me that much, but I didn’t know it was a dangerous disease. My mother told me that later, ”says Magdalena.
It got worse and worse
– She was getting worse and worse. Saturday was the worst day. He vomited, had diarrhea and a very high fever. He also had a severe stomach ache. She is usually patient, but now she was in so much pain that she was crying, says Zarah.
He tried to talk to his daughter, but when he asked questions, Magdalena was speechless.
– She seemed a bit confused and had a hard time answering. Later we were told that the syndrome can affect you cognitively, he says.
In the end, the doctors managed to lift the strong reaction of the immune system.
After eleven days in the hospital, Magdalena was finally able to return home. However, he was allowed to continue taking certain medications for preventive purposes, including Thrombyl, which counteracts blood clots.
Scared of getting sick again
Today Magdalena does not remember much of the June drama.
– I did not know what kind of disease it was, nobody told me that much, but I did not know that it was a dangerous disease. That’s what my mother told me later, she says.
His main memories are that he was boring in the hospital and that the breakfast was good.
– And it was nice that my little brothers weren’t there, he says.
How are you today?
– Good. I am a little afraid of having covid again. I would like to know if you can have hyperinflammation twice. I don’t expect it, says Magdalena.
