Isam Abedel-Rahman, a healthy and active great-grandfather, had come to work out at the Nordic Wellness gym in Älvängen on Monday. Like so many times before.
When I was running on a treadmill, the terrible accident happened.
Isam passed out, fell backward and hit his head on a beam of rough iron a few decimeters behind the tape.
– I was at work when I received a call that Isam had been injured in the gym and that he had been transferred by ambulance helicopter to Sahlgrenska. I was completely chilled, says Niklas Älvenholm, Isam’s nephew, who was previously interviewed by SVT Nyheter Väst.
Isam’s injuries were serious, and despite the efforts of the doctors, his life could not be saved. A few hours after arriving at the hospital, Isam, 56, died.
The bleeding caused Isam’s death.
According to the doctors, it was a blood vessel that burst in Isam’s chest that caused him to pass out.
– Doctors said he suffered a brain hemorrhage in connection with the case, and that was the cause of his death, says Niklas Älvenholm.
It has been a difficult week for Niklas and his family. The loss of Isam is great.
– He was my best friend. We fish a lot together and go out with the boat. That’s why I also want to tell you about the accident, says Niklas.
The family wants to prevent similar accidents
On Facebook, Niklas Älvenholm has shared the accident and his thoughts about it, and the spread of the post is enormous.
– There are many people who have heard of him. But my family and I want this to reach as many people as possible. If Isam’s story can only be extended to save one life, then he has not died in vain, says Niklas.
The family has now reported the gym to the police, but the classification has yet to be determined. Now the family also wants Nordic Wellness to take responsibility.
– It’s tragic what happened to Isam. Had I been biking or elsewhere it might have ended differently. But it’s inconceivable how you can have conveyor belts so close to a wall, and I was there after the accident, they are still just as close, says Niklas.
GT has reached out to Nordic Wellness CEO Magnus Wilhelmsson for comment. Return in a text message:
“I don’t know what I can add to this terrible event with respect and regret for the family. Incredibly sad and you think of the relatives. The incident is under investigation and it is good, “writes Magnus Wilhelmsson.
