In his first speech as the new leader of the Left Party, Nooshi Dadgostar clearly expressed the party’s attitude towards the continued handling of the latter issue.
The Left Party will not accept, he stressed, new labor legislation unless LO is on the train. If the government and the January parties run over LO on this matter, Stefan Löfven cannot remain prime minister, was Dadgostar’s message.
Both she and the Prime Minister know very well that there is a majority in the Riksdag who, in that case, is ready to remove Löfven. But how far Nooshi Dadgostar is willing to go is, of course, impossible to answer today.
Hard to back down
However, after the harsh tones of Sunday’s speech, it will be difficult for her to back down on the subject later. At the same time, a declaration of censure would lead to a government crisis and could eventually pave the way for the moderate leader Ulf Kristersson as prime minister.
Whatever happens, the Party of the Left concludes that there are voters to win if the pressure on the government is maintained on the last issue. The development of opinion this fall, where the Left Party has made progress, reinforces this view.
The issue is also closely related to the general strategy of the Left Party to enter the LO collective. Job security is also traditionally a parade theme for the political left. When the Social Democrats now cooperate with the Center Party and the Liberals, and have accepted a modified labor law under the January agreement, opportunities are created for the Left Party.
Rural voters and workers
The party remains weak among voters in LO and in rural areas. Therefore, the party congress has indicated as a declared strategy to grow in precisely these groups of voters. In this strategy, the last issue will be an important component in reaching out to traditional worker voters and LO members.
Nooshi Dadgostar’s message about continuing the fight on the last issue was also delivered in a speech that largely could have been delivered by the LO president. References to workers in many LO unions were numerous and commendable, while the historic starting point of the speech was the Social Democratic icon, August Palm.
The course of the march is thus clear to the new left leader. It is the continuous expansion of the party that applies. Jonas Sjöstedt has laid the foundations and the ambition of the new party leader is to continue on the established path.
At the same time, a generational change has now been implemented within the Left Party. Also, rarely has a party leader change in party occurred as smoothly as this time.
Silent on immigration policy
But several tough challenges await the party’s new leader, Nooshi Dadgostar, even if he takes over a party with a tailwind.
The issue of Las may be important to various LO members, but what has led many of them to switch parties to the Swedish Democrats in recent years is immigration policy. And the question is whether the Left Party is today a realistic alternative for these voters. Nooshi Dadgostar also did not address immigration policy in one word in his speech today.
