When will we know how things have gone this year?
The first polling stations close at midnight Swedish time, and since there are several different time zones in the US, the last ones close at 7am on Wednesday morning on our schedule. Overnight forecasts flow gradually, generally arriving fairly quickly after polling stations have closed.
Several of the major wave master states, including Florida and Pennsylvania, close at two in the evening.
You are talking about forecasts and not results, why?
There are no complete results immediately after the polls close, but these are forecasts based on early counts in often smaller districts, in some cases votes-by-mail that have been counted, and, not least, polls. This mainly weighs the various media companies in the US together with historical data and then makes a forecast.
Is there a problem with this way of expressing the results?
Absolutely, you’ve been wrong in reporting at times, in part because media companies often struggle to be first with a major result, and therefore didn’t wait long enough before sending out the news.
This time around, it will be even harder to determine when you can be sure a forecast is correct due to so many mail-in votes, which also makes polling at the polls more difficult, and the vote count is expected to take longer. .
When will we know who won?
In the elections four years ago, Donald Trump was declared the new president of the media companies at 8.30, of course there was no final result then, it may take weeks, but enough information and partial results for it to be established. This year, many believe it will take much longer than that.
