Isam passed out on the gym treadmill, hit his head and died

Isam Abedel-Rahman was on Monday as many times and trained at the Nordic Wellness facilities in Älvängen.

The training session would end with the death of the 55-year-old man, which SVT was the first to report.

Niklas Älvenholm is Isam’s nephew and has recounted the tragic death on social media, hoping he can prevent other gym visitors from being similarly affected.

– We want gym visitors to be aware of how the machines are positioned and we dare to say when it doesn’t look good. If we only get one person to survive, Isam has not died in vain, Niklas Älvenholm tells GP.

Thrown to the beam

He has worked out many times with his uncle in the gym, where the treadmill sits next to a wall where a beam runs across the floor.

But on Monday lunchtime, Isam trained alone.

– Before I was completely healthy, I did not smoke, I did not drink, I was a healthy person who never had a heart problem, says Niklas Älvenholm.

But on Monday, Isam collapsed on the treadmill and passed out. He was then thrown with full force against the beam next to him and suffered serious head injuries.

His life could not be saved

A major rescue operation was launched, including an ambulance helicopter. Isam was taken to Sahlgrenska, where he was fitted with a respirator. However, his life could not be saved and he died Monday night.

– There were two things that happened at the same time; He passed out and was thrown against the wall. But according to doctors, it was the bleeding in the brain that caused his death, says Niklas Älvenholm.

The family has reported the gym to the police.

He and Isam’s other family believe that the result would likely have been different if a risk analysis had been done in the gym and the treadmill had not been placed directly against the wall.

“We in the family have reported the gym to the police,” says Niklas Älvenholm.

GP speaks Saturday night with Magnus Wilhelmsson, CEO of the Nordic Wellness chain. He says he does not have time to speak with the GP, but says before hanging up that he sends “a response to the press.”

Wilhelmsson sends GP an SMS with the gym chain’s crown measurements.

After that, he doesn’t answer the phone.

Late on Saturday night, Magnus Wilhelmsson sends an SMS:

“I took it for granted that it was Corona you were looking for me … my mistake. Terribly tragic for the family, of course. That’s what you’re thinking. But it’s good that it’s being investigated.”
