Donald Trump, 74, eller Joe Biden, 78.
The presidential election is of great importance to the United States and the entire world on a number of issues such as trade, climate and security, and therefore affects Sweden as well.
This is how the election results in Sweden will feel in the areas of climate, economy, security and politics, according to various experts.
WEATHER
If Joe Biden becomes president, the weather and other issues that are important to Sweden will come up more. And it benefits Swedish politics and the economy, says Roger Josefsson, sustainability director at Danske Bank Sweden.
– Joe Biden has promised to feed the United States with the Paris Agreement and the environmental agenda in the world. It is important for Sweden and reflects areas where Sweden plays a prominent role, says Roger Josefsson.
– It benefits Swedish companies that are at the forefront when it comes to sustainable and climate-friendly production, he says.
Explain that Biden promises to invest $ 2 billion over ten years in the environment and energy. And he says it’s a huge investment that Swedish companies can enter as suppliers and subcontractors.
– Four more years with Trump doesn’t make much of a difference for Sweden in particular. But it underlines to the world as a whole that it is urgent to achieve the climate goals. We don’t have many years to adjust our finances, says Roger Josefsson.
ECONOMIC
Swedish companies doing business with the US will be affected by duties and taxes. Trump has introduced tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from, among others, EU countries, and has threatened to impose tariffs on EU cars. While Biden announces tax increases.
All of this also affects the Swedish stock market. Experts don’t think there will be great drama in the stock market if Trump loses.
– As long as there is no limbo situation in which no winner can be chosen, I believe that the market will be able to handle the election without great drama. Any tax increase from Biden is on the negative balance of the stock market. Trump, on the other hand, wants tax cuts, but on the other hand, he’s not as big of a stimulus as Biden, says Johanna Kull, a savings economist at Avanza.
Maria Landeborn, senior strategist and savings economist at Danske Bank, is in the same vein.
– I think the market has started praising Joe Biden’s win, so there doesn’t have to be such a big reaction. There are some of Joe Biden’s policies that could scare the market, and those are tax increases, he says.
He explains that the entire auto industry has been under pressure during the Trump era and if it stays the risk increases in that sector, which, for example, could affect Swedish companies like Autoliv and Veoneer.
SECURITY
Sweden maintains close cooperation on security policy with NATO and the United States. So who the American president is is of great importance to the security of Sweden.
– With Biden, we have a more predictable and rational leader in the White House. Avoid Trump’s impulsive tweets and you can have a more consistent policy, says Niklas Granholm, head of research at the Swedish Defense Research Agency (FOI).
– We have a situation with Russia in an offensive and aggressive phase. That is why we work closely with NATO. You may feel safer for Sweden with a predictable president like Biden – it hasn’t been that easy with Trump, he says.
He stresses that Biden, like Trump – and many previous presidents – will demand that NATO members and other partners, like Sweden, help “share the burden,” that is, invest more in defense.
POLITICIAN
With Joe Biden in the White House, the United States will have a president closer to the Swedish vision of democracy and human rights, issues that are fundamental to Sweden’s foreign policy.
This is what Jan Hallenberg, research leader at the Foreign Policy Institute, says, who believes it can lead to closer cooperation between Sweden and the United States.
– Biden may show a greater interest in Sweden as a democratic example. Trump never raises questions of democracy and human rights. So there will be more consensus, there may be closer cooperation on these issues between Swedish and American diplomats at the UN, says Jan Hallenberg.
He says that trade issues are the most important and that Trump is very critical of the EU, something that affects Sweden. Trump is also negative about the World Trade Organization, which is important to Swedish politics. In these matters, there may be a positive change for Sweden with Biden.
– I believe that a Biden administration will have a greater tendency to reestablish and strengthen relations with traditional allies, including Sweden, says Professor Matthew Kroenig, an expert in security policy at Georgetown University in Washington, to SVT.
