On Thursday, the general councils in Östergötland tightened. On Friday, the municipality of Linköping called a press conference to report on the consequences of the situation now tight for the residents of the municipality.
– We are in a dire situation when it comes to the spread of infections. Of the municipalities in Östergötland, Linköping is the most affected in terms of the number of infected, said the chairman of the municipal board Niklas Borg (M) and continued:
– To stop this, we as a municipality and all Linköping residents have a responsibility to follow the advice of the Public Health Agency.
Municipal Director Paul Håkansson explained that the municipality is now closing, among other things, the swimming pool and all municipal libraries.
– We are investing in making maximum stops for three weeks. We will close our art gallery, we will have the meeting places Agora, Arbis and Skylten closed. All events are canceled. Kulturskolan cancels his activities. For primary school students, certain activities will be maintained.
The municipality’s ice rinks are only kept open to associations, as long as the general recommendations are followed. The public changing rooms of Ryd and Vidingsjö will be closed.
Paul Håkansson said that two schools in the municipality were affected last week by the spread of the infection. But the schools will remain open next week.
– The school will resume operations on Monday. It is the most critical activity in the entire municipality.
It is not relevant to reintroduce distance education in upper secondary school once again, because a decision is required at the national level.
– It may be relevant to close certain school units if the contagion situation makes it necessary. Today we have no such evidence, said the municipal director.
Although the municipality cannot impose a restraining order on nursing homes, Paul Håkansson urges all family members to avoid visits.
– We urge family members to avoid visits to nursing homes during these three weeks. We prioritize socially important activities, volunteer activities that we close during these three weeks.
Niklas Borg also urges all Linköping residents to avoid using public transport or visiting restaurants and cafes if possible. The president of the municipal board also said:
– The strategy that Sweden has had at the moment is not working. This is because people are tired of the pandemic. They have not been able to cope. We got too close, Niklas Borg said and continued:
– We ask a lot. We have the opportunity to make an effort. As a Linköping resident, there are many things you can do. I want to ask the people of Linköping to limit their social contacts, refrain from parties and family parties. I want people to try to avoid going to restaurants and cafes.
Niklas Borg spoke directly to municipal residents in an attempt to exacerbate the severity of the current situation with further spread of the infection.
– Now it’s serious! It is now being decided whether we will be able to stop this spread of the infection and prevent a major Linköping shutdown in the coming months. I am prepared for a real effort as an elected representative and resident of Linköping.
Niklas Borg said the municipality has had contact with representatives of the Norrköping municipality in an attempt to propose similar measures to stop the spread of the infection.
