Record Demonstrations Against Poland’s Abortion Team

The protests against Poland’s proposal for stricter abortion laws have been going on for more than a week.

The triggering factor was last Thursday’s decision in the Polish Administrative Court, which ruled that abortion is contrary to the Polish constitution.

Record demos

The decision means that Poland now has a chance to introduce a new law prohibiting abortion, except in the case of rape or when the mother is at risk of dying.

On Friday, the streets of Warsaw were filled again in what is described as the largest demonstration to date. The protesters also gathered in front of the house of Law and Justice Party leader Jarowslaw Kaczynski.

“It’s about the freedom and dignity of the people,” Klementyna Suchanow, a spokeswoman for the protest movement, told the Associated Press on Friday.

Information on how many people participated in the protests varies, but according to information from local authorities, there were tens of thousands of people.

At the same time, on Friday night, there were reports of counter-protesters firing fireworks at the demonstration trains.

He wants to sentence the protesters to prison

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has previously compared the protests to “barbarism” and decided to deploy military police against the protesters on Tuesday. The protests have also been criticized for countering the country’s work against coronary heart disease.

Poland has been severely affected by the increased spread of Covid-19 and gathering in groups of more than five people has been prohibited for some time.

The country’s Public Ministry previously warned of prison sentences of up to eight years for protesters, which it considers “constitutes an epidemiological threat.”

Very strict legislation

Poland already has very strict legislation on abortion and the court’s decision means that almost all permitted abortions can be stopped.

Last year, just over 1,000 abortions were performed in the country. In 98 percent of the cases, they were injured fetuses, according to the BBC.
