One of the golden heroes has passed away when England won the World Cup in 1966.
Nobby Stiles died on Friday after a long illness.
He turned 78 years old.
Nobby Stiles suffered from prostate cancer in 2013 and also suffered from severe dementia. He died on Friday, his family said in a statement, according to the BBC.
“The Stiles family regrets to announce that Nobby Stiles passed away today after a long illness.”
More than 300 games
Stiles was one of the great English players of the sixties. He made more than 300 appearances for Manchester United and 28 international appearances for England.
During the 1966 World Cup, he was a contributing factor to England winning their first and so far only World Cup gold and also won the European Cup with Manchester United in 1968.
“A big heart”
Stiles was called “The Toothless Tiger” and was known for his uncompromising style of play.
