On Wednesday evening IFK Gothenburg held a digital membership meeting. 843 Blue and Whites had signed up.
Like so many times before, the economy came into focus quickly. At the time, the club had a budget goal of going plus-minus-zero for 2020, it was noted in early September.
However, due to the corona pandemic, IFK Gothenburg does not appear to be successful with it.
– The forecast now is that we will land somewhere in the district of minus five to minus 15 million, declared club director Max Markusson during the membership meeting.
– The reason there is such a wide range is because we have a number of interesting agreements pending negotiation and because we also do not know how much RF (Riksidrottsförbundet) will contribute.
IFK Gothenburg entered the year with a net worth of 22.6 million. It will therefore remain positive if the current forecast materializes.
One explanation for the negative result for 2020 does not appear to be greater is that the club has received 10.5 million from various fan initiatives.
– It was absolutely decisive and fantastic, said Max Markusson.

The sale of Jesper Tolinsson to Belgium’s Lommel SK has also played an important role. It is estimated that IFK Gothenburg will receive around 25 million for the talent of the center-backs.
– The negotiation we had with Lommel and City Group started much earlier. There we have felt that we will end up at a level that ensures our fairness. Then we made the decision not to sell any more players, said Max Markusson.
– The lack of sports results has made the players not so attractive, they would not have paid us so well if we had sold now. Taking into account the deal we made with Lommel, we made the decision that the players will remain in Kamratgården and help secure a fully Swedish contract.
“Nothing we want to talk about”
Speaking of the blue and white economy, a question arose during the membership meeting as to whether the club has a plan B in case there is a relegation to the Superettan. IFK Gothenburg is just above negative qualifying spot at the moment.
Max Markusson replied:
– We work with different budget alternatives. This is not something we want to talk about, the whole focus should be on staying at Allsvenskan, but we are prepared if that happens.
Markusson added – on the sports situation:
– That we are a little more than a qualification line was not included in the plan. We have to face ourselves asking rather difficult questions: Why have we ended up where we ended up?
Sports director Pontus Farnerud:
– This is not enough for IFK Gothenburg, we must be self-critical. We have not been good enough. The table does not lie.
– We wanted to take the lead (this spring) to compete against the other teams. But when we were going to continue building, the crown came and hit the sport hard. We had to pull the handbrake when it comes to new acquisitions and players. The most important thing was to find a balance in the economy.
IFK Gothenburg have five games left to play in the 2020 Allsvenskan. Örebro SK is looking forward to the next one.
