Thousands of people in Poland protest every day against the country’s harsh new abortion legislation, and now the protests are spreading outside of Poland as well.
– I have a heart for Poland and I believe that every woman has the right to decide about her own body. No one else should, no government or party, says Anna Aronsson, 30, of Stockholm.
Protest outside the embassy
She protested in front of the Polish embassy in Stockholm along with 150 other protesters. They held banners and shouted slogans.
Poland plans to toughen its already very strict abortion laws, among other things it will ban the abortion of injured fetuses. Thousands of people protested in the cities of Warsaw and Lodz on Wednesday against the government’s plans for legislation.
The Minister for Gender Equality, Åsa Lindhagen (MP), now wants to give Polish women the opportunity to have an abortion in Sweden.
“Free and safe abortion in Sweden”
“It is time for Sweden to defend Polish women in the same way that Poland once defended us! In the 1960s, when abortion was banned in Sweden, thousands of Swedish women traveled to Poland, where abortion was legal., writes Åsa Lindhagen on Instagram and continues:
“The Green Party now wants Sweden to offer Polish women a free, subsidized and safe abortion in Sweden. No woman should risk her life in illegal abortions.”

On Thursday, the Polish Constitutional Court ruled that the abortion of injured fetuses is unconstitutional. It paved the way for the planned tightening of the abortion law and sparked violent protests. The protesters blocked the streets of Warsaw and surrounded the parliament building.
– We are in the middle of a corona pandemic. The demonstrations will cost many lives, said Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the ruling Law and Justice Party.
“Polish friends appreciate”
Marta Kosinska, 24, from Stockholm takes part in the demonstration in front of the Polish embassy in Stockholm. She says it is important to show that people from other countries also care about what is happening in Poland.
– The demonstration shows that people all over the world do not want what is happening in Poland to happen. I spoke with my Polish friends. They really appreciate people here protesting and showing their minds, he says.
Aleksandra Piwowar, 24, from Linköping:
– I am here because I believe that all women should have the right to their own body. It is 2020 after all. I don’t understand how anyone else can decide on other women’s options, so I’m here to fight.
