Peter Madsen took a woman hostage and threatened to carry a bomb and a pistol.
Thus he got out of jail where he is serving a life sentence for the murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall.
The attempted escape came as a shock to the Danish prison service. Herstedvester Prison receives many of the most dangerous prisoners in Denmark and has special care programs for prisoners in need of psychological or psychiatric treatment.
The institution has the highest security class, but Peter Madsen was still able to withdraw.
– Escape attempts, such as the one that took place on Tuesday, October 20, simply must not occur. So we have now gone through security at Herstedvester Prison and appointed a task force that can implement new security measures in the here and now, Prison Service Director Ina Eliasen says in a press release.

The task force is made up of guards from other prisons in Denmark and takes immediate responsibility for reinforcing security in the institution. Among other things, they will identify any deficiencies in safety and initiate investigations into how these deficiencies should be avoided in the future.
Peter Madsen was caught on camera just two minutes after the prison warned about his escape. A surveillance camera shows him walking at 10:23:08 with steps defined by the Albertslund industrial zone.
He wears dark clothing and a backpack, with one arm swinging freely to the side. Police and guards are seen running after him.
According to the Danish police, Madsen was arrested at 10:26. During these three minutes he managed to get into a white van.
Peter Madsen has acknowledged the circumstances surrounding the escape, but has not acknowledged that he would have accomplices.
– You explained that you were tired of the restrictions that were in prison, for example around communication lines. But now there will only be more of those kinds of restrictions, Madsen defender Anders Larsen tells BT.
