The reason why the city of Malmö breaks cooperation is that the website of the digital book fair through a link offers anti-Semitic literature, according to the city of Malmö.
– It’s a book called “The Synagogue of Satan”, says Pernilla Conde Hellman.
What does the book contain?
– I have not delved into it, but it is easy enough to see that it is rude anti-Semitic literature and apparently the publisher is known for it too.
How did you discover this?
– We have received indications from the Jewish congregation, they have informed us about this and we are grateful for that.
The cooperation with the Arab Book Fair has now been broken.
– It goes against everything we defend and, therefore, we decided to immediately terminate the collaboration, says cultural director Pernilla Conde Hellman.
“They could have called us”
Esaat Estabrak is the coordinator of the Arab Book Fair. He says he does not know what kind of anti-Semitic material has caused the city of Malmö to suspend cooperation:
– This is not something we have received information about so far, he says. We are trying to contact the city of Malmö now to solve this problem, he says.
She thinks that the city of Malmö should contact them before the press release is sent out.
– You could have called us and told us we could have fixed this.
According to cultural director Pernilla Conde Hellman, representatives of the Arab Book Fair must have been contacted on Tuesday night as the link was removed.
The city of Malmö has contributed SEK 150,000 in support of projects for the Arab Book Fair, which this year is organized by the newly formed association.
– We are canceling the planned events with the Arab Book Fair and hope that other collaborators such as the Swedish Arts Council will do the same, says Pernilla Conde Hellman.
Based on mutual trust
The Arab Book Fair has been held in previous years by another organizer, then without the support of the city of Malmö. According to Pernilla Conde Hellman, this year’s support was granted with special conditions and will be followed up after the event.
The city of Malmö will now review whether they can claim support for the already paid project.
How can this be avoided in the future?
– It’s very difficult to do that. Our cultural support and our collaborations are based on mutual trust. If you receive support from the city of Malmö, you must sign the values and conditions that exist to receive the money.
Do we need to clarify the conditions for cultural support or set higher requirements?
– Actually such a review is underway, we have such an assignment and it is now in the final phase. We will clarify the values in the criteria even more
