Retirees Ewa and Sune Murman have spent the winters in Gran Canaria for ten years.
They have experienced both the Swedish and Spanish crown strategies. The worst was when Spain was under lockdown this spring.
– I am not a person to be easily intimidated, but after the meeting with the police I was more confident than I have been for a long time, says Ewa.
In March, Ewa and Sune Murman felt ready to spend the winter on their beloved Atlantic island. It was the 10th year that they spent the coldest season in the sun instead of at home in Mönsterås, Kalmar. But this time it was more difficult to go home. At the same time, Spanish restrictions became increasingly strict.
Flight after flight was canceled.
– At first we thought that shit, we’ll be standing a while longer. But then the pool closed and overnight it became … not unpleasant, but lonely. It didn’t feel right, Ewa says in the spring.

The only rescue for Ewa and Sune was the balcony overlooking the mountains and the popular beach in Puerto Rico.
For 17 days, the couple were locked in their studio apartment.

– There are usually so many loungers that you can hardly see the sand between them. Now it’s been completely empty, says Ewa.
The police gave feelings to Franco
During the worst closing period, you were only allowed to go out and buy one by one. But it was not entirely easy to understand all the new rules. That the other accompanies to act as a transporter outside the store, they believed it was allowed, but then they received a real reprimand from the police.
– They were really chasing us. The second time they took us it was horrible. The police who told us then, it was Franco’s feeling for him, says Ewa.

Sune nods and accepts. They tell of another occasion, when they went to help their Norwegian neighbors to unload their suitcases from the apartment complex. The police then drove by to make sure everyone in the area obeyed the strict restrictions.
– When I saw the police, I ran and hid. He felt uncomfortable.
Sune complete.
– It’s very difficult to have that feeling. It was difficult. At our age, it’s not often that you run away from the police, he says.
Prefer Spain anyway
In the end, it was possible to book a flight back to Sweden, where they spent the summer in their motorhome.

Here we feel safer, says Ewa.
– At first I was angry to hear that we, who are over 70 years old, would be treated differently. But then I realized that it is for our own good, says Ewa.
The spouses believe in the strategy of the Swedish crown because the people have more faith in the authorities. At the same time, they have been horrified to see the Swedish news.
– The rules are not respected in the same way in Sweden. We also noticed it this summer. Here we feel safer, says Ewa.
– In Spain, it may be necessary for the police and the military to be tough for people to listen, Sune reasons.
Visits to pools and restaurants may be limited for a time in Gran Canaria, but Sune and Ewa still thrive like fish in water.
– We never hesitate to come back here this fall, says Ewa.
