Here, the inhabitants of the married plots in Mariebo deliver the collection of names to the municipality

For a month, the neighbors of Mariebo have collected signatures with comments on the management of the poisonous plots in which they live. In the comments, the majority agree that the municipality of Jönköping must take responsibility for helping the residents.

“It is a pity that this collection of names is needed. The municipality of Jönköping should have assumed its responsibility a long time ago! All the strength to the neighbors”, can be read in one of the comments, signed by a person from another county .

Therefore, the municipality does not buy the houses

More than 40 years ago a dry cleaner was built in Mariebo, which was later demolished. The cleaners left behind chlorinated solvents. No one responsible for dry cleaning is alive and therefore cannot be held responsible for contaminants in the soil.

Because the case is so complicated, it takes many years before the problems can be fixed, so the residents want the Jönköping municipality to buy their houses so they can live on non-toxic land.

– We will be trapped here for several more years before we even reach the remedial measure possible, says Marie Wikander.

Authorities say they are working as fast as they can – shouldn’t you wait?

– We have lived here and been exposed to these environmental toxins for so many years, we just want to get out of here so we can start our lives again, she says.

The municipality of Jönköping, on the other hand, does not want to buy the properties unless SGU, the geological survey of Sweden, to which the municipality has handed over the matter, concludes that the purchase of the houses is the best alternative to solve the situation.
