GOTHENBURG. A celebration feels so bad when fans can’t join in.

That is why we are taking steps so that we all understand: in the summer of 2022, the most important European Championship in history will be held and Sweden will participate.

Now Peter Gerhardsson has a year and a half to dress this team in an even more modern, even more beautiful and stylish outfit without opting for the classic Victory Elements.

Do you remember the hot summer of soccer in France? When women’s soccer broke boundaries, when viewer numbers soared, when fast-paced soccer finished in the middle.

Can you imagine the summer of 2022 in England? No, me neither. With the development of the league game and the interest and support (financial, symbolic, concrete) of the big clubs in the country of origin of football, it will be a dream for all football lovers.

Peter Gerhardsson believes that the championship will be bigger than the World Cup in France and then it will be big. Development is proceeding so fast that the snowball is rolling and cannot be stopped.

More and more players with academic training and solid training are forming frames in national teams that are both physical and fast and technical.

On the Gamla Ullevi carpet, the Swedish players celebrated the entrance to the company party. It was pretty simplified as all sports are still done in times of covid. Players carrying each other on the back, players hitting a victory sign and photographing themselves to capture the moment.

Without an audience, the celebration became poor. It’s a reality we live in and fans have rarely been missed more.

I never got excited

In the summer of 2022, we expect, for millions of reasons, that the pandemic has subsided. May we live a championship with the fans singing in the streets, hugging each other in the stands, with children and parents who go to the powerful stadiums of England to see the football of the future.

It remains to be seen how it will look with Swedish eyes.

Peter Gerhardsson and Magnus Wikman are traveling with their team. They have created a direct and deep team in a playing team that handles both high and low defenses.

It may seem banal when Caroline Seger talks about games with the right foot. Basic for any footballer, but with speed in all its simplicity it is extremely effective.

The passing game shattered Iceland’s dreams. They did not have time to appear in the press and their physical strengths never became theirs.

The thriller against Iceland was never exciting. Or yes, the first trimester.

Sweden initially showed their intentions. Move the ball quickly, avoid getting into melee. Game spins and quick balls after a few hits deep to threaten behind Iceland’s bottom line and separate the team parts.

But after a quick seven minutes, Iceland’s first pitch came and it immediately turned dangerous. Sveini’s Jane Jonsdóttir shot long and the ball lay and danced freely on the straw in the penalty area before a Swedish player managed to push off from there.

Other Icelandic advances challenged the Swedish defense, but Hanna Glas and Magdalena Eriksson marked the bottom line.

Lifting of holes

The choice of Jennifer Falk in goal meant a status and security that was lacking in Iceland last time.

And with that security on defense, Sweden could slowly make their way into the match.

When Sofia Jakobsson, who shot wide, carefully entered the penalty area at Iceland’s invitation, it was 1-0.

But the highlight was delivered by Olivia Schough when she landed a dream hit in the second half. She never felt the ball go off the foot, so nice was the hit.

The 29-year-old’s journey back to the team and the starting eleven she was out in is in many ways eye-opening for this national team. The players want to be part, the players want to belong to a group that has grown and that has been technically and tactically involved in development.

That Sweden play championships is old. Sweden’s performance in the championships is a new product.

Under the leadership of Peter Gerhardsson, a seriously injured team has been pulled out of the hole. But for the 2022 European Championship in England to be a Swedish party too, it’s important not to be vague.

Swedish players in foreign professional clubs are a must, a development in damallsvenskan a requirement. The European Championship may be the championship when the talented young Hanna Bennison from Rosengård achieves her international breakthrough.

It could well be another championship as team captain Caroline Seger takes her team with a steady hand and shows where the locker should be.

Many complain about Caroline Seger, she says she is slow, drives and lays down and has her prime behind her.

We’re going after the 2022 European Championship, I think. Peter Gerhardsson’s team turns modern, but leans toward a veteran.
