Piero Giacomelli and Luigi Nasca, who were head referees and VAR referees respectively in Monday’s Serie A match between Milan and Roma at San Siro, will be suspended for at least two rounds. This is what Italian Sport Mediaset affirms after the two referees were responsible for two serious errors during the match.
The first of two actual misses took place in the 69th minute when referee Giacomelli awarded Roma a penalty after Milan’s Ismael Bennacer was kicked by Roma’s Pedro in his own penalty area. When Pedro fell in connection with the situation, Giacomelli conceded a penalty to Roma, even though it was the Milan players who were stamped. On the penalty, Frenchman Jordan Veretout made it 2-2 in the tie.
Just ten minutes later, the referee team returned to their concentration due to an error. On this occasion it was Milan Hakan Calhanoglu who was sanctioned after falling easily in the penalty area of Rome. Another situation where the penalty was hotly debated, resulting in Zlatan Ibrahimovic being able to score 3-2 for Milan.
The reason why VAR referee Luigi Nasca is being sanctioned is that he did not decide that Giacomelli would review the situations. The Referee can only review the situation through the VAR if the VAR Referee asks him to do so, it is not something that Giacomelli had the authority to do on his own initiative.
Italian base referee Nicola Rizzoli was not impressed by the efforts of the two referees at San Siro, and according to Sport Mediaset, he has now decided to close Giacomelli and Nasca for at least two rounds.
