Seagulls may have spread crown between mink farms

The seagull had no antibodies and therefore he himself has not been ill.

– It also did not have any ongoing infection, it showed an examination of the beak and the gutter, but we are investigating whether it may have spread the infection between mink farms, Anne Sofie Vedstedt Hammer, a professor at the University of Copenhagen, tells the newspaper.

Several nearby mink farms in Jutland have been affected by corona infection, and one theory is that the infection is spread between farms by other animals.

– Infection among mink farms is widespread in much of Denmark, so it is natural to investigate the spread there, says Karl Ståhl, a Swedish state epizootologist, to the newspaper.

In Denmark, minks are killed on other mink farms within eight kilometers of an infected farm. In Sweden, infection of employees and animals has been confirmed at a mink farm in Sölvesborg. So far it is not relevant to kill all minks on affected farms, but the recommendations can be changed quickly.

– Since most of Sweden’s mink farms are very close to each other in the municipality of Sölvesborg, there is a great risk that there will be a spread between the facilities and then we will have to review the decision, says Karl Ståhl.
