British police confirm that an operation is underway on a tanker off the Isle of Wight. It will be Nave Andromeda, a thinker with a Liberian flag, who that same day would have arrived at the port of Southampton, writes BBC.
According to The Sun, seven illegal immigrants are suspected of being aboard the tanker. The newspaper initially reported that the ship had been hijacked, but later denied the information.
Police have not confirmed that there are people illegally aboard the tanker.
“Handle an event in progress”
The newspaper writes that Nave Andromeda was last in the port of Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos, on October 5.
– We are aware of and handle an ongoing incident aboard a ship off the Isle of Wight, the police spokesman said in a statement, according to the BBC.
The Coast Guard announces that it is assisting the police with, among other things, rescue helicopters.
During the afternoon a closure zone was established around the tanker. Other boats are encouraged to keep a distance of just over 9 kilometers.
British Home Secretary Priti Patel has been informed of the incident.
