Italy is tightening its national restrictions after a record number of new COVID-19 cases were detected in the country.
The new rules go into effect nationwide on Monday and mean that restaurants must end their service by 6 p.m. and that cinemas, theaters, gyms and swimming pools must close.
Schools will remain open, but teaching for older children will take place through the Internet. Additionally, citizens are urged to avoid public transportation.
In several regions, night curfews have been imposed and many regional leaders have called on Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte to ease restrictions on the rescue of companies hardest hit by this spring’s shutdown.
In Naples, among other places, there have been protests against the local curfew that was introduced there and just hours before the new restrictions were announced, right-wing extremists in Rome met with the police during a protest against the curfew.
On the contrary, researchers have demanded that more be done to slow the spread of the infection.
Italy has reported more than 37,000 corona-related deaths since the virus began to spread.
