It was in December 2019 that the father left with his wife and daughters, now 14 and 16, to Iraq, writes Smålandsposten. The plan was to marry the eldest daughter to a man in January of this year. The little sister was also getting married, according to Växjö social services, who had participated in the repatriation.
Kept locked up
The mother and children remained locked up during the trip and must have also been beaten. With the help of social services and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the mother and daughters finally managed to escape and return to Sweden, where they have now been placed at a protected address. The father also returned to Sweden, resulting in a temporary travel ban for the two girls.
– We have worked so that the girls and the mother return home. When the father returned home, it was clear that this would not go well, says Per Sandberg, head of labor and welfare administration in the municipality of Växjö, to Smålandsposten.
New law allows bans
The travel ban could have been issued thanks to a new law that will prevent children from being taken abroad for genital mutilation or marriage.
– It gives us a space to be able to act and help the family and children in this case, Per Sandberg tells the newspaper.
According to the National Competition Team Against Honor-Related Violence, a total of 48 people must have been abducted or detained in another country from June to September this year, as previously reported by Kvällposten. Of them, 41 were children.
