Michel Barnier extends his visit to London.

EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier should have left London on Sunday, but plans to extend his stay until Wednesday next week, the Sunday Telegraph reports. The message has been interpreted as a breakthrough in the EU-UK Brexit negotiations.

British negotiators will accompany Barnier to Brussels, writes the newspaper, which also reports that the parties have given until next Saturday to reach an agreement.

Fishing has been described as the biggest issue in dispute, but talks have also stalled on how to resolve disputes in the future and how to ensure fair production conditions for trade.

The UK formally left the EU on January 31 this year, but the transition rules apply until the turn of the year. If agreements cannot be reached before then, in the worst case, a crisis situation awaits with sudden customs duties, red tape and long lines at border crossings.
