The government has raised the limit on the number of people who can sit in the audience at cultural and sporting events from 50 to 300 people. But the Skåne county board of trustees is debating whether the border should be maintained locally.

As of November 1, cultural and sports organizers will be able to receive 300 people in the public, as long as groups of no more than two people are at least one meter from the next party, since the government recently relaxed the rules .

The limit falls within the Public Order Law and is mandatory in contrast to the recommendations that are voluntary to follow. The Skåne County Board of Directors is now considering whether to decide on a local exemption from the increase and instead keep the current limit of 50 people.

– We always follow the infection control recommendations. That said, we are a little concerned that the number of hospital admissions has risen sharply in Skåne in recent days, even in intensive care units, more places have been filled in a relatively short time, says county director Ola Melin.

Different legislation

Melin points out that a decision has not yet been made, that it may arrive at the end of next week, and that it is the region’s infection control doctors who have the decisive competence in the matter.

– I have the best knowledge of the situation of the poor organizers. Personally, I think it is very sad not to be able to go to a concert or party, says Melin.

– So I can understand from Skåne’s perspective that a lot of people think it’s illogical that a restaurant in Lilla Torg in Malmö can have 100 guests having fun and being very close to each other, and that the theater next door can’t have more of 50 in a living room. I agree with that, basically it is about us having different legislation for one or the other.

“A question may arise”

TT: Is there a risk that the organizers will move the events to nearby counties to circumvent a local ban?

– The thought has not hit me, but it can be. All county administrative boards work through a national coordinating office on this issue. It’s definitely a problem that can come up, says Melin.

Region Skåne has already decided that it will not allow more than 50 people in the audience of the Malmö Opera and Malmö Dance Theater, which is owned by the region, with reference to the infection situation.
