After the massive protests, the crisis rises in Thailand

Tens of thousands of pro-democracy protesters have demonstrated in Bangkok in recent weeks. The protest movement demands that the military junta that came to power after the 2014 military coup must resign. They want to see a monarchical reform and leaders elected by the people.

By Wednesday at the latest, the protesters arrived with a concrete demand. The prime minister had three days to resign; otherwise, the demonstrations would resume.

The state of emergency is lifted

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has refused to accept the demand. However, the government has now decided to lift the state of emergency announced in the cities where the protests take place.

In a statement published in the state newspaper Royal Thai Government Gazette, Chan-o-cha said the situation was “resolved and stopped.”

The prime minister had previously promised to lift the state of emergency if “there are no more violent incidents,” writes CNN.

Parliament holds a crisis meeting

Since October 13, between 70 and 80 protesters have been arrested. At the same time, there have been reports that the police used water cannons against the protesters.

The prime minister addressed the violence in a speech Wednesday:

“Last Friday we saw things that should never happen in Thailand,” Prayut said, according to CNN.

Due to the situation, Thailand’s parliament is expected to convene for an emergency meeting on Monday. The meeting was approved by King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who had previously called for an end to the conflict.

“The country needs people who love the nation and the monarch’s institutions,” the king said in a televised speech last Friday.

The statement was met with strong criticism and continued demonstrations throughout the week.
