Last summer, Climate Minister Isabella Lövin (MP) announced that the government will assume the right to decide whether Preem can expand its oil refinery in Lysekil. The reason was that emissions from the new plant were estimated at 1.7 million tons of carbon dioxide, an amount so large that it was considered that it could affect the possibility of achieving national climate goals.
At the end of September, Preem itself decided to withdraw its application for a permit for the expansion. According to CEO Magnus Heimburg, the decision was made after the company judged that the profitability of the project was not sufficient.

The company has now submitted a new plan for the Lysekil refinery. Preem wants to rebuild an existing part of its plant so that recycled rapeseed oil, tall oil and frying oil can be used in the production of diesel. The company declares to DN that the proportion of these raw materials must be up to 40 percent in the rebuilt facility.
– A false climate solution, says Isadora Wronski, Sweden’s acting director at the environmental organization Greenpeace.
All fossil energy production It must cease, according to Isadora Wronski. It advocates investments in public transport and other means of transport other than cars with traditional internal combustion engines.
– Burning animals, forests or food in fossil cars is not sustainable. We must look ahead and invest in long-term sustainable solutions, efficiency and electrification. Everything else delays the actual transition.
Preem CEO Magnus Heimburg tells DN that the transition to a fossil-free society requires a number of different measures.
– I am convinced that liquid fuels, and renewables, have an important place to occupy in this transition, he says.

Greenpeace has previously held protests in front of the Lysekil oil refinery, including blocking the entrance to the crude port with its Rainbow Warrior ship. It has not yet been decided how the environmental organization will act after the company’s new message, according to Isadora Wronski.
– We are currently analyzing what will be the continuation. Sweden needs to shift its focus to real climate solutions. That’s what we need to focus on in the coming time, he says.
