A little more than 4,000 people, with confirmed covid-19, are included in the study. It is based on a mobile app, where millions of users in Sweden, the US and the UK have been able to report their symptoms.
Tove Fall, professor of molecular epidemiology at Uppsala University, is leading the Swedish part of the study called the Covid Symptom Study.
– Of the Swedish material, 2.5 percent had continuous symptoms eight weeks after getting sick, he tells SVT.
This means that 25,000 Swedes may be affected by covid in the long term.
The figure is based on the Swedish Public Health Agency’s estimate that the death rate in covid-19 is 0.6 percent. Today, almost 6,000 people in Sweden have died as a result of the viral disease, which in that case means around a million infected.
Teacher: “A challenge”
2.5 percent of a million infected are 25,000.
– This is a challenge for both people to be sick for so long, the proportion it will be, but also for the insurance systems, which can count on a long sick leave, says Tove Fall to SVT.
Women suffer more than men when it comes to long-term covid. And the older you are, the more common it is with long-term symptoms.
The study was submitted for publication, but has not yet been reviewed.
