Almost 5,000 people have lost their lives as a result of the three-week conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, says Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“According to our information, the death toll on both sides is almost 2,000. The total death toll is starting to approach 5,000,” Putin said in a televised speech on Thursday.

According to estimates by the AFP news agency, some 1,000 people have died in the current conflict.

The Caucasian Nagorno-Karabakh formally belongs to Azerbaijan, but in practice it is a separatist region under the wings of Armenia, with a mainly Armenian population.

The conflict has great nationalist overtones and both Azerbaijan and Armenia make historic claims in the area.

Two ceasefires, negotiated by Russia in October, have collapsed.
