A higher ceiling for audiences at cultural and sporting events, but stricter rules for nightclubs in the country.

During the government press conference, good news was delivered for some, bad for others.

– It should be finished now, said Stefan Löfven.

While state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell did not voice major concerns about the crown situation during today’s official meeting, the tone during government-called press meetings was more serious.

– The spread of the infection is increasing in the world, also in Sweden. We can’t help but end up in the situation we were in last spring, said Stefan Löfven.

It was clear that the government had taken the photos of recent weeks of dance floors packed with Stockholm’s nightlife wrong, as Aftonbladet reported. And the tone towards nightclubs and club guys was harsh.

– It is not enough to run around the holidays, it is deeply irresponsible and disrespectful, said Mikael Damberg (S), Minister of the Interior.

Damberg: Nightclubs threatened our strategy

He also presented his verdict. Public dance events for more than 50 people are now banned again.

– We lifted the prohibition so that restaurants with a seated public could host a troubadour. Then the discos opened and we hadn’t seen that in front of us, said Mikael Damberg.

A dance event is defined as an event in which visitors can dance to music. Among other things, the presence of a DJ or a dance floor can decide the matter.

A maximum of eight people can sit at the same table.

– I think it threatened our strategy when health workers saw pictures of people partying in nightclubs, says Damberg.

He stressed that this is a prohibition that is punishable by law, not just a recommendation.

Audience ceiling raised to 300

But if the party-hungry Swedes took a cold shower in connection with today’s press conference, cultural and sporting life received a happier message.

  • The limit for public events with a seated audience was raised from a maximum of 50 people to 300. However, not to 500, as was previously the case.

  • Participants must sit at a distance of one meter.

  • Two people from the same company can sit together.

  • The rules apply to cultural and sporting events, but also to other gatherings such as religious gatherings.

Amanda Lind (MP), who was very pressured by the sports and culture sector around the high ceiling, was happy today.

– I am very happy that we can take this step. It is highly anticipated by citizens, sectors and by our society. We need it during the pandemic.

Whether certain restrictions are tightened while others are eased has to do with general acceptance of them and perseverance, said Johan Carlson, Director General of the Swedish Public Health Agency.

– We must be able to handle the pandemic for a long time and live our lives quite normally.
