On June 22, the police were alerted to the camp by Lake Fryken at Kil in Värmland. Inside a caravan, a woman was found dead.
The man who alerted police, the woman’s husband, was arrested at the scene and later charged with murder.
Prosecutor Rebecca Hällgren demanded that the man be sentenced to life in prison for murder.
– He says both in the alarm call and to the police at the scene that he has killed her and that he hopes she is dead, Hällgren said when the charges were brought.
On Thursday, the district court ruled, they follow the prosecutor’s line on the crime and convict the man of the murder.
The penalty is set at eight years in prison, less than the minimum penalty:
“The district court concludes that there are reasons for a sharp reduction in the length of the prison sentence due to the very old age of NN. NN’s age coupled with the fact that it is a very long prison term means, as assessed by the district court, that there are grounds for falling below the minimum 10-year prison term prescribed for murder. ” write to court about the length of the sentence.
The man denies the crime
The man has admitted the facts, but denies the crime and claims self-defense. According to him, he has only protected himself in connection with a fight with his wife.
– He had no intention of killing her and so it’s not murder, says the man’s defense attorney, Mats Hellman.
However, the prosecutor believes that the explanation does not hold, as there were no signs of problems in the caravan where the woman was strangled to death.
The right: you cannot escape responsibility
The court believes that it is proven that the man was in an emergency situation but that the violence was not proportional to the situation.
“NN’s emergency action has therefore been clearly unjustifiable. Therefore, NN has used more force than allowed by the provisions on self-defense.”
Furthermore, the court writes:
“Therefore, the district court considers that NN does not evade responsibility for self-defense.”
During police questioning, the couple’s neighbors testify that the man was very drunk that night and that the couple had quarreled before the murder took place. Several neighbors woke up later to the police raid.
The couple had been married for more than 50 years when the event took place.
