Information about a hole in the Estonian helmet attracted a lot of attention when the documentary series “Estonia: The Find That Changes Everything” was released on Dplay in late September.
Now another hole has been discovered, reported by Sjöfartstidningen and SVT Väst. They refer to an unofficial document recently published by the Estonian government on its website.
Experts from the Tallinn University of Technology, among others, must have been able to participate in the raw material of the documentary shortly before its broadcast. There, they are said to have discovered another horizontal hole on the starboard side of Estonia. It should be further aft and be a few meters long and tens of centimeters wide. They write that the hole appears to go along a weld line and that no notches are visible.
ROV operator Linus Andersson he was the one who directed the underwater camera in the documentary. For SVT Väst, he says the second hole is not journalistically interesting.
– The horizontal hole was probably caused by stress on weak points in the hull. This may have happened when the ship hit bottom or during the sinking process. But in any case, it is not a print damage like the one we have shown.
Estonian experts clearly points out that they don’t think the holes can explain why the ferry sank so fast.
The movies will also contain clear images of the seabed and a collection of larger rocks. Experts believe it is quite possible that the holes in the hull arose when the ferry sank and hit the seabed. However, they consider that the hole shown in the documentary was caused by a collision on the surface of the sea.
The Estonian government notes that the experts’ comments were written immediately after viewing the video and that the conclusions are not based on a comprehensive analysis. It is also stated that the report has no official status.
